what is happiness

 what is happiness?

Happiness is a feeling of long-term well-being, emotional comfort and satisfaction from our lives. That’s what we’re all looking for, all the time. When we feel a little or a taste of it, we want to maintain it forever.

People often confuse happiness with pleasure. We generally think that we are happy if we eat good food, wear expensive clothes, and always have fun. But for some reason it never succeeds. We are also tempted to think that we are happy if all our needs are satisfied. But of course, just looking at ourselves leads us to loneliness and depression.

Sometimes being alone with our thoughts and moods makes it difficult. Then, we find music, computer games, food, sex, and other occupations to divert attention. But this does not really connect us with others. Nor does it provide the true meaning of happiness.

We often turn to social media when we want to experience happiness and connect with others. We get instant enjoyment from the number of likes we receive for our selfie or from a note from a friend. But it also makes them more needed. We always check our phone with anxiety as to what the next response will be. We end up with the feeling that no matter how many likes we get or how many notes we get, we are not so connected with others.

The Buddha preached that loving others greatly is the source of true happiness: if we sincerely look for the well-being and happiness of others, we will feel a genuine sense of well-being. We feel healthier than we are physically. By thinking of the other person's happiness, we try to help them as much as we can and not do anything that could harm them. This creates a trusting friendship that makes our lives more meaningful. Psychological support from family and friends gives us the strength to deal with everything that happens in life.

We need to start exploring ourselves before we can really explore other people's happiness. If we do not have the ability to wish for our own happiness, how can we seek the happiness of another? In Buddhism, happiness is wished for all.
